Useful Links

The following are a tabulation of sites that I have found useful in some way, whether it be for entertainment, video editting, gaming or even tasks with more professional aspirations.

Featured Sites
I find MMORPG subculture very fascinating, although I am not good enough to really participate myself.  This is a funny look into the lives of a group that had up until now only known each other on line. Doogie Houser and the captain from Firefly (directed by the creator of Firefly) come together in this absurdly touching and creative musical
Sites of Friends
Paul is a good friend of mine from high school.  This is his professional website for his marriage and family therapy practice.  His love and compassion are only some of the qualities that I am sure make him a great therapist As the goddess of fertility and the hunt, Artemis IT, a company started by a good friend of mine from high school has definitely flourish.
This is my friend Matt's personal blog.  Matt and I are friends from high school.  Back in the day Matt and I shared a great passion for music . . . perhaps this is something we still share, but I have not seriously played my sax since college. Matt's family blog maintained by his wife Becky.
Anna and I were the best of friends when we were very little.  Its always fun to be able to keep up with friends for so long.  We haven't seen each other in quite some time, but she built a successful career as a photographer and this is her professional site. I actually don't know this guy . . .and he for sure doesn't know me, but I know his brother.  Ben is an artist and a master at Flash.  I enjoy seeing the things that he comes up with
My old employer has an interesting perspective on political philosophy that he expounds on in this web site.  I am embarrassed to admit that I am a sheeple . .. baaaaah.
Entertaining Sites
Netflix I have been a part of netflix for a while and it is OK . . . Blockbuster does the same thing for the most part, but Netflix has on line movies too which is a great way for me to catchup on a lot of old cheesy 70's sci fi movies. ABC I am still a fan of Lost and so I am happy they ABC carries episodes on line.  Lost only has 1 or 2 seasons left . . . I look forward to enlightenment, although I am betting that the ending is going to be without any closure or enlightenment, but if done well that could be good too.
USA Two words . . . Burn Notice.  Catch the episodes on USA's site.  I am also a sucker for USA's "Characters Welcome" slogan . . . I think it works. NBC I had fought it for a long time, but I am not a mega fan of 30 Rock and The Office.  I am also enjoying Kath & Kim, which I don't understand why.  I think it is because Molly Shannon is actually fairly well balanced in the role.
I find MMORPG subculture very fascinating, although I am not good enough to really participate myself.  This is a funny look into the lives of a group that had up until now only known each other on line. Jonathan Coulton This guy used to be a programmer I believe but then found his calling with music.  A number of World of Warcraft (MMORPG) music videos have been made, and then he got catapulted into nerd history by having written a popular song for the hit video game "Portal".  I enjoy the portal song and one called "drinking with you"
How It Should Have Ended Some of these are funny.  I know that a few of my friends and I have often considered how different stories would be if that 'one' little thing wouldn't have happened. Doogie Houser and the captain from Firefly (directed by the creator of Firefly) come together in this absurdly touching and creative musical
GameSpot I do love to play video games and I have found GameSpot to provide useful reviews on games The Line Game You may see McDonalds commercials now that use line rider in the background.  It was developed several years ago and is a pretty intriguing physics program with an open ended challenge to just create the most absurd obstacle course that the little guy can traverse without wrecking or falling.
Video Editing Utilities
Free Music This has a bunch of free music that you can use as filler for videos. Sound Effects
1 2 3
Here are some sources where I get sound effects
Creative Cow This site has a lot of useful tutorials for how to use some of the software that I use Lynda.com This site requires a subscription but it has been very useful for getting most of the basic understanding of much of the software I use.  In many cases reading is a better way for me to learn, but these videos are things that I can play in the background while doing other things and pickup tidbit as I go.
Adobe There are a lot of different flows and specific pieces of software and although Final Cut Pro for the Macintosh is still much of an industry standard, Adobe is the PC standard I believe for a lot of video editing.  I am pretty familiar with Premiere Pro and Encore right now, but am trying to wrap my head around After Effects, PhotoShop, Flash, InDesign.  So much to learn so little time. celtx As I am considering how to best organize scripts and other information pertaining to pre-production information, I stumble across this program.  It is a database that houses scripts, organized by scenes and characters, with casting and setting etc. too.  I don't know how to use it but it was a free program that I thought might be interesting to learn how to do it.  It formats the data in standard ways so that if I were ever to share a script with a professional the hope is that it would be in a format that he/she could easily understand.
Windows Moviemaker if you have windows, Microsoft has packaged Moviemaker with the OS.  This is a pretty reasonable tool for modifying and doing some basic editing with home movies. TMPGEnc For those who want to convert file formats . . . this program is very useful, effective and very efficient.  It most useful function for me is that it is a way to get DVD video into another format that can be edited.  This is also a great way to backup video if you have home movies stored on DVD etc.  Most if not all hollywood type DVD's are copy protected and so this program is not able to do anything with those videos.  There are other cheaper and probably even free programs that do similar things, but this has been the most effective for me.  Another one such program that caught my attention but didn't necessarily hold it was badaboom.
Generally Useful Tools
Picasa This is a tool from Google that helps organize photos with some basic photo editing capability.  I also am using Adobe's bridge which has some good things with it, but I tend to use bridge as my link to photoshop but use Picasa to do general organization etc. Google Earth This is mostly just for fun, but there are a lot of tools here for pre-exploring areas that you may be visiting in person.  I also think that a tool like this could be a great hub for travel logs and photo albums, but I am not sure if you can use it as such just for personal use without broadcasting it to other people.
Free Commander If you want a little bit more powerful file explorer this may be up your alley.  Many years ago I was on the search for a good explorer (one with ftp, synchronization, filters, customizable hot keys, multiple tabs etc.) and I came across Enriva's Magellan Explorer which served me well, but sadly it has issues in Vista x64 (or at least I do), but a was introduced to this program which is free unlike Magellan, and is seemingly as powerful. Notepad++ As a low grade programmer I love good text edittors.  I had loved Codewrite for a long time which is a very expensive tool and I did not even scratch the surface of what it could do, and although I was more familiar with that tool . . . again due to Vista x64 issues, I had to find another program.  Again this is a free program, and although I have not learned how to use quick key macros or other things, this program has proven to be a very capable text editor.  The one thing I really like it codewrite was the ability to select columns of text . . . this is actually a very cool ability in programming I think.
Filezilla I think free commander has FTP, but this is also a very good ftp program SonicWall My friend Travis with Artemis has introduced me to this, and it had essentially changed my professional life.  As a general computer person that wants to access his/her computer outside the home or office there is a site/service call gotomypc, in general this is a useful tool if you need some basic access to your computer while you are away or travelling, but it is web based and pretty slow.  Sonicwall has routers that help you setup virtual private netwoks (vpn) that allow you to work on you computer at home or the office from anyway as if you were sitting right in front of it.  When my last job got this, it had changed the way we did our work, and enabled us even more when we were on business trips.
JAlbum With lots of free blog and picture sharing site, this program may not be as generally useful as some of the others, but this is a HTML album generator that I use and been happy with.  It is what generates the the albums I use on my site. Vista Voice Recognition Out of curiosity I had purchased Nuance's Dragon Naturally Speaking.  I was completely impressed that it works so well, especially for a guy like me that has issues articulating clearly.  I tried to get it installed on Vista x64, but it is not supported and it didn't work properly, but in trying to get it to work, I realized that Vista has a built in voice recognition.  I don't think it works quite as well as Naturally speaking but it is still very good.  A big part will be the microphone I think.  Anyway, I keep thinking I am going to dictate some clever things one day, but sadly I type faster than my brain thinks anyway (and I type very slow) and so dictating hold no immediate benefits for me, but I thought I would pass this information on.
